No More Quick Fixes
Understand Burnout and How to Overcome It
Here are some things people do that frustrate me …
People driving into my lane – drives me crazy. Stay on your side! I just want to get to where I’m going.
People who stop while making turns. Just keep rolling and don’t cause a crash!
People who don’t appreciate the beautiful game of soccer and don’t understand the difference between 1 goal being 1 point and 1 touchdown being 6 points. 18-6 in football is 3-1 in soccer.
Most importantly though – people who offer shortsighted quick fixes wrapped in beautiful branding to sell products instead of helping people. At the end of the day, that’s just as bad as a check cashing stand outside of a military base (i.e. more harmful than helpful).
Why am I saying this?
If you are constantly overwhelmed … or feel like you can never catch up … or feel like you can’t get around the bureaucratic roadblocks … or feel like you are losing and doing everything you can muster to win … then, recognize that some people call that “burnout”.
Burnout is not fixed by only finding out how you can work best. Leveraging your strengths and knowing how to work effectively can game-change your burnout. We help with that. It’s a very important part of the solution and our business, but it is not the full answer to helping you overcome burnout.
The solution to overcoming burnout, exhaustion, frustration … well … it takes a deeper fix. There’s a reason leaders look back on their lives after retirement and tell us, “focus on what matters”. For generations, leaders have realized that their pursuit of success left them missing out on what makes a truly successful leader.
Their answer is not simply finding out how to best work on the team.
Their answer is to know where you are rooted and to align what’s most important with how you show up at work and at home.
How do you overcome burnout? Get connected to the WHY that gets you out of bed each morning so you can bring your purpose to work and home.
To lead with purpose, keep in mind that you must have rhythms of rest, healthy community, and reciprocity in your relationships. When you are rooted in purpose – knowing how to leverage your strengths at work is like moving from a Corolla to an Audi S6. It’s awesome!
But simply knowing your personality and strengths does not solve your problems. It’s like popping Advil to get rid of a headache when, in reality, your body is craving water and rest because you are dehydrated and tired.
Your soul is craving clarity and alignment to your purpose. Your team needs you to do the hard work to bring your best self to work.
This starts with your purpose. Then, we can build on how you can show up for your team and organization.
We don’t need to keep putting band aids on our leadership. Let’s do the real work to get healthy.
Ultimately, the leaders who are most healthy are the leaders people love to follow, the leaders who leave a legacy worth remembering.
